Marketplace Fairness Coalition & MFA – Big Box Retailers Trying to Quash Competition

  • Who is really behind the Marketplace Fairness Act?  Big box retailers first.  Sales tax compliance companies as well.

A quote from the August 2nd 2013 Wall Street Jourmal page one article on freshman GOP mentions who is pushing the MFA:

“Representatives of retailers Best Buy, Home Depot, Target and others had piled into Mr. Massies’s office in June to give him an earful about how online retailers now have a pricing advantage, according to participants in the talks”

Listed as supporters on the Marketplace Fairness Coalition website include:

  • Bed Bath and Beyond
  • Best Buy
  • Wal-mart
  • Home Depot
  • Target
  • Fedtax (AKA Taxcloud – a sales tax compliance company)
  • JC Penney
  • Lowes
  • Petco
  • Petsmart
  • Sears
  • Staples

Passing the Marketplace Fairness Act is all about big box stores harming competitors.  And if it passes, it will do nothing to solve the challenges facing small “main street” businesses.  Their biggest challenges are from the retailers on the above list, globalization and other pressures.
